Pentatonic Guitar Arpeggios
Find complete triads and seventh chords inside pentatonic scales, with C-root examples, note lists, interval formulas and matching fretboard charts.
How to use these chord-tone maps
An arpeggio plays a chord’s notes one at a time. These tables show complete major, minor, augmented and diminished triads, and complete seventh chords, whose notes fit inside each five-note collection. Power chords and incomplete chords are not labeled as triads or sevenths.
Every scale example starts on C. A chord can start on another note inside that scale: for example, A minor seventh uses A, C, E and G, all contained in C major pentatonic. The chord’s interval formula is measured from its own root.
A five-note collection does not provide a full triad or seventh chord on every scale note. Use the actual chord tones listed here instead of assuming that every other pentatonic note forms an ordinary triad or seventh chord.
Read a chord’s notes in order, then use its fretboard chart to find them across the neck. The linked chart opens the same scale with that chord’s tones highlighted; it also includes the full scale and its position maps.
Note names follow the chart library’s sharp-based display: D# and E♭, for example, identify the same pitch here. Chord interval labels show each tone’s relationship to its chord root. Use the guitar intervals reference to read those formulas on the fretboard.
C Major Pentatonic
Major pentatonic uses 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. Its complete triads are built on the root and sixth; the seventh chord below starts on the sixth.

C Dorian Pentatonic
This Dorian pentatonic collection has the same notes as minor pentatonic. It leaves out the natural sixth that distinguishes the full Dorian mode, so the chord lists are the same as the minor-pentatonic lists below.
- Scale notes:
- C · D# · F · G · A#

C Phrygian Pentatonic
The flat second distinguishes this five-note collection from minor pentatonic. Keep that note in view when comparing its chord tones with the Dorian and Aeolian pentatonic collections.

C Lydian Pentatonic
This Lydian pentatonic collection omits the sharp fourth of full Lydian. Its notes and contained chords match major pentatonic; the five-note shape alone does not express the full Lydian formula.

C Mixolydian Pentatonic
This Mixolydian pentatonic collection omits the flat seventh of full Mixolydian. Its notes and contained chords match major pentatonic. Adding a dominant seventh would require a note outside this collection.

C Locrian Pentatonic
Locrian pentatonic lowers the fifth of the minor-pentatonic collection. Its root diminished triad and half-diminished seventh both contain that flat fifth.
